There are three ways to search Living Relatives

Each search can return up to 600 results that match your search criteria. The Person search will return up to 200 electoral search results, up to 200 telephone directory results, and up to 200 directors’ details.

Tip: You will not receive any telephone directory information among your results, unless you include some place information in the search box, however vague. This requirement is imposed by OSIS, who supply the telephone data. You can enter a street name, village, town or city name, or even a county in the Location field will allow you to obtain telephone results.

Use of wildcards

As with most searches, the less information you provide, the more chance you have of ensuring that the person you want appears within the search results. For example if you are looking for Stephen Millar from Dallington Street, Clerkenwell, London by narrowing your search with all this information you will not find him if he spells his name with a V or has recently moved from Dallington Street. But if you’re searching for a common name, you need to be more specific to ensure that the person you are looking for appears within the first 600 results, otherwise you may need to perform another paid search. So do think about your search first – don’t give too much detail, but try to avoid making your search too wide.

Person search

Step 1
Enter the name of the person you’re searching for in the forename and surname boxes. Use wildcards (*) or initials if you’re not sure about spellings. For example * will return results for Clark, Clarke and Clarkson; Cl*rk will return Clark and Clerk. You can enter a street name, village, town, city, county or postcode in the Location box.

Tip:It is worth putting at least a county in the Location box to ensure that you can receive information from telephone directories.

Step 2
You can use the Advance search to find someone living with another adult. For example, you can search for all the William Smiths living with someone called Mary Smith in a particular area.

Step 3
Do check your search before you click on the Search button, as you will be charged for your search at this point. Each search costs ten units, whether or not you receive any results.

Step 4
You can resort your results by clicking on the column headings.

Address search

Similar steps to person search. You don’t need to fill out all the fields but you must specify details such as street, road or avenue, and location and county to further easily refine your search

Business Search

Very straightforward but again, be very specific with the company name, which is a required field, and the location – often less is more.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I find someone who should be listed?

Since 2002, each person has the chance to opt out of the published version of the electoral roll, so not everyone will be listed. Similarly the person you are looking for may have chosen to be ex-directory for their telephone number, or may not be the telephone account holder within their household. And many people are not directors of companies.

Is the information up to date?

• The information is from the most recent available version of the electoral roll.
• Telephone listings are compiled by OSIS from details supplied from the major telecoms suppliers, such as BT. These are updated weekly.
• The directors’ listings contain historical information, including the address at which the individual was living at the time the company information was supplied to Companies House.

As the information is collected from these sources at different times, the same individual may be listed at different addresses within electoral roll, telephone listing and directors’ details.

How much does the Living Relatives search cost?

You will be charged ten units for each search, whether or not it returns any results. The cost is therefore between 50p and 100p depending on which price plan you have purchased.

We have to charge per search, rather than on viewing results as is our normal practice, as this is required by our data licensor. To avoid paying for a wasted search, make sure you have entered the data correctly and read all our search tips before paying for a search.
