Search Tips for the Registers of Names of Passport Applications 1851 to 1862 and 1874 to 1903

This search allows you to view the digitised images of the original indexes of Names of Passport Applicants from the records of the Foreign Office, and Passport office.

Searching is free, and you will be charged three units for each record that you choose to view from the search results.

To understand more about these records, read the section in our help and advice section

Step 1

You will need to enter the first three letters of the surname you are looking for. Click on the Search button.

Tip: Surnames A to G are missing for 1858 and there are no records for the years 1857 and 1863 to 1873 inclusive.

Step 2

Your search results will be displayed. From the search results displayed, scroll through to find the entry you wish to view. Choose which entry you’d like to see and click on View, the original image will appear in a separate window. The units will be deducted from your account.

Tip: You may find that your search returns many results. You can refine your search by clicking on ‘Redefine current search’, limiting the years of your search and systematically eliminating those not relevant.

Step 3

Choose which entry you’d like to see and click on View. The original image will appear in a separate window. The units will be deducted from your account.

To view the image you must already have registered and signed in the site, downloaded the DjVu viewer and have units in your 1837online.com account.

You can return to the image at any point during your current session, or save it to your hard disk to view at any time.

Tip: From 1851 to 1862 applicants are listed alphabetically and record the surname, forename and often further initials and title; the passport number, date of passport and in some cases observation notes are given.

From 1874 to 1903 the index is not strictly alphabetical, applicants are grouped by the first letter of the surname and listed chronologically recording the surname and forename initial, and there are no passport numbers or observation notes.
