Frequently asked questions
Census
Can I search the census by piece, folio and page number?
As well as searching by surname, first name, address, sex, age, condition of marriage and relationship to the head of the household you can search by RG number.
The RG number is the official National Archives (GRO) reference to locate a specific page of the hundreds of enumeration books that make up an entire census.
Why are some schedule numbers missing from the list of addresses?
Some addresses contained several households, each of which has a different schedule number. In the address search results, you are only shown the first schedule number for each address. However, if you choose to view the address transcript you will see every household and schedule number for that address.
Within the census records, what is a schedule number?
The enumerator allocated a different schedule number to each household that he visited, in the order that he visited them. As several households may have lived at one address, there may be several schedule numbers attached to the same address.
